Phil has experience as Counsel and Grade 1 Arbitrator in a wide range of commercial arbitrations over many decades. Phil took silk in 1993.
Phil has a rare set of competencies in several areas including construction, property and share valuations, investments, farming disputes, cost allocation, accounting, and superannuation.
Phil was a trustee and later director (and Chair for 10 years) of Barfund, the Victorian Bar Superannuation Fund from 1992 until 2009, when Barfund merged with Legalsuper.
Phil then served the maximum allowed term of 12 years as a director of Legalsuper, the super fund for the legal industry, until retiring in June 2021.
Phil served on the Investment Committees of both organisations for the entire period of 29 years, and as Chair for many of those years.
Phil has served on the Victorian Bar Council and Chief Justices Law Reform Committee.
Phil continues to serve (from 2009) on the Supreme Court Library Fund Investment Committee.
For many years Phil represented the Victorian Bar as a member of the National Young Lawyers Committee.
With his rural background, Phil initiated and coordinated the long running Victorian Bar Bushfire Victims Assistance Scheme, whereby Bar members acting pro bono volunteered to advise and represent bushfire victims.
In 2012 Phil was inducted as a legend of the Victorian Bar.
Phil is available to conduct mediations, arbitrations and expert determinations, having long experience in all these alternative dispute resolution areas.
