Rod is a senior Australian and international lawyer experienced in the conduct and resolution of complex disputes.
He has been admitted in New South Wales, England & Wales, Hong Kong and Victoria, and has worked as a lawyer in Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore and Melbourne.
Rod originally spent 11 years working with Baker & McKenzie, finishing as Partner in Charge of both the Insurance Practice Group and the Investment Funds Practice Group in their Hong Kong Office.
He then spent 4 years as General Counsel of AHC Limited, at the time the second largest ASX listed hospital operator in Australia. Notably, Rod conducted the lengthy and detailed litigation against the Victorian Government in relation to the Latrobe Regional Hospital privatisation.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Rod was Asia Pacific Regional Legal Director of Cadbury Schweppes for 8 years managing, inter alia, disputes in China, India, Japan, SE Asia and Australia, including the “Purple Wars” litigation concerning the use of the colour purple, and also the very significant anti-cartel cardboard packaging litigation. He was also the Chairman of the Cadbury Schweppes Asia Pacific Incident Management Committee for 7 years, resolving numerous large scale commercial disputes and crises in Australia and around the Asia Pacific.
Since coming to the Bar, Rod has also appeared (both as a Junior and solo) representing the TAC on numerous occasions in relation to serious injury claims.
Rod was an Accredited National Mediator from 2011 until 2013.
Rod’s other professional passion has been as a medical doctor. Since qualifying as a doctor 30 years ago, he has studied and/or worked in the Emergency Departments of hospitals in the USA, Hong Kong and Australia (most recently taking some time away from the Bar to work in the ED’s at Box Hill Hospital and Casey Hospital). Such experience has given Rod a unique perspective in the conduct and resolution of medical disputes.
Rod’s life passion, apart from his family, is agriculture. He has conducted hazelnut and other crop farms for 20 years, and operated a cattle stud for the last 12 years. Once again, this has provided him with broad knowledge and experience in negotiating and resolving agricultural disputes.
Rod’s primary interest in returning to the Bar is to assist in the resolution through negotiation and mediation of the myriad disputes flowing from the devastating Covid19 pandemic.
